Community ideas flow in for Indiana redevelopment
The WA community has provided suggestions for the redesign of the Cottesloe foreshore and Indiana site.
The West Australian community has responded enthusiastically with ideas to re-invigorate the Indiana site at Perth’s Cottesloe Beach.
Over 100responses were received from a broad cross-section of the community over nineweeks, in response to a call-out for feedback from Minderoo Group which is inthe process of acquiring the site.
Primarysuggestions from the public for the redevelopment of the site included:
- A beachside pool
- An arts and cultural hub
- An amphitheatre or events space
- A boardwalk
- The refit of the existing building
- The development of a new, iconic building
- A designated function space
- Increased food and beverage options
- Upgraded amenities
- Increased accessibility
This community feedback was provided to the 11 invited architects and was reflected in their first design phase. Four finalists were then selected to progress to the final stage of the competition – Spaceagency and Place Laboratory (WA), Durbach Block Jaggers Architects with OHLO Studio and ASPECT Studios (NSW), Kerry Hill Architects (WA) and Neeson Murcutt and Neille , Simon Pendal Architects and Sue Barnsley Design (NSW and WA). The finalists are in the process of completing their designs.
Minderooco-founder Nicola Forrest said she is excited about this next step.
“We’rethrilled the public has responded so enthusiastically to our request forsubmissions,” Ms Forrest said.
“We’re eagerto see how these four outstanding Australian architects incorporate thecommunity feedback into their designs for our beautiful beachfront.”
The four final designs will be published on the Minderoo Group website before the end of June and will be open to community comment. The judging panel, chaired by renowned West Australian architect and professor Geoffrey London, will then consider the designs in conjunction with the public feedback and make a final decision in mid-July.
The jurywill consider:
- Benefit tothe community, through the provision of a variety of spaces, services andpublic facilities
- Designexcellence, including the integration of architecture, landscape architectureand urban design
- Accessibility,including the ease of movement at the site and the provision of safe andaccessible service areas for a range of visitor experiences
- Collaboration,including facilitating the needs of the Surf Life Saving Club’s patroloperations and upgrading the public changerooms and toilets
