The West Australian community has responded enthusiastically with ideas to re-invigorate the Indiana site at Perth’s Cottesloe Beach.
Over 100
responses were received from a broad cross-section of the community over nine
weeks, in response to a call-out for feedback from Minderoo Group which is in
the process of acquiring the site.
Primary
suggestions from the public for the redevelopment of the site included:
- A beachside pool
- An arts and cultural hub
- An amphitheatre or events space
- A boardwalk
- The refit of the existing building
- The development of a new, iconic building
- A designated function space
- Increased food and beverage options
- Upgraded amenities
- Increased accessibility
This community feedback was provided to the 11 invited architects and was reflected in their first design phase. Four finalists were then selected to progress to the final stage of the competition – Spaceagency and Place Laboratory (WA), Durbach Block Jaggers Architects with OHLO Studio and ASPECT Studios (NSW), Kerry Hill Architects (WA) and Neeson Murcutt and Neille , Simon Pendal Architects and Sue Barnsley Design (NSW and WA). The finalists are in the process of completing their designs.
Minderoo
co-founder Nicola Forrest said she is excited about this next step.
“We’re
thrilled the public has responded so enthusiastically to our request for
submissions,” Ms Forrest said.
“We’re eager
to see how these four outstanding Australian architects incorporate the
community feedback into their designs for our beautiful beachfront.”
The four final designs will be published on the Minderoo Group website before the end of June and will be open to community comment. The judging panel, chaired by renowned West Australian architect and professor Geoffrey London, will then consider the designs in conjunction with the public feedback and make a final decision in mid-July.
The jury
will consider:
- Benefit to
the community, through the provision of a variety of spaces, services and
public facilities - Design
excellence, including the integration of architecture, landscape architecture
and urban design - Accessibility,
including the ease of movement at the site and the provision of safe and
accessible service areas for a range of visitor experiences - Collaboration,
including facilitating the needs of the Surf Life Saving Club’s patrol
operations and upgrading the public changerooms and toilets
